Every student should have a physical or digital study journal that they bring to class. Study Journals are used for testimonies, class work, handouts, and especially scripture study. Nephi (2 Nephi 4:15) taught what he prioritised in his small plates: “I write the things of my soul”.
In keeping a study journal, your students might choose to answer the following question:
“How did God bless me today?”
In taking notes from a lesson a student might consider the following:
What do I most want to remember?
What promptings impressions or insights did I receive?
What do I think the Lord wants me to do?
What question or concern do I have?
Not every question needs to be answered and responses do not need to be lengthy. Students may wish to record something that was of particular importance to them. Use journals during a lesson or when at home – to record personal views/thoughts/feelings about a particular topic or principle, you may do this by using some strategies to help the student in scripture study.
Elder Richard G Scott stated:
“You can learn vitally important things by what you hear and see and, especially, by what you feel, as prompted by the Holy Ghost. . . Consciously seek to learn by what you see and feel, and your capacity to do so will expand through consistent practice. Ask in faith for such help. Live to be worthy of it. Seek to recognize it. Write down in a secure place the important things you learn from the Spirit. You will find that as you write down precious impressions, often more will come. Also, the knowledge you gain will be available throughout your life. Always, day or night, wherever you are, whatever you are doing, seek to recognise and respond to the direction of the Spirit. Express gratitude for the help received and obey it. This practice will reinforce your capacity to learn by the Spirit. It will permit the Lord to guide your life and to enrich the use of every other capacity latent in your being.”
