At the beginning of each term, teachers should provide time for students to discuss the value of scripture study and its ability to help them draw closer to their Saviour Jesus Christ. Students should be encouraged to set their own daily scripture study goals. Teachers play an important role in helping students accomplish these goals and they fulfill this role in many ways, including:
• Using scriptures and teachings from modern prophets to help students understand the importance of daily scripture study for their own discipleship and conversion to Jesus Christ.
• Helping students establish daily scripture study goals that are appropriate, meaningful, and tailored to their needs and abilities.
• Knowing the students and following up with them regularly on their experiences with their scripture study.
• Providing regular opportunities in class for students to testify of what they are learning and feeling about Jesus Christ and His gospel through their personal scripture study.
• Consistently helping students be accountable by creating opportunities in class for students to track their daily personal scripture study in the mySeminary app or other recording method
Record your ideas and impressions on how you may like to implement these principles with your students.
Teachers can help students develop a love for the scriptures by encouraging them to create or maintain daily scripture study goals. Remember that personal daily scripture study is just that—personal. The experience will be different for everyone, but with the help of the Holy Ghost, students can develop a daily scripture study goal that will be most meaningful for them. As time passes, students may feel they would like to adjust or modify the goal they have made.
Students will have a greater desire for daily scripture study as they come to understand for themselves the promised blessings associated with it. There are many ways teachers can help students decide at the beginning of each term why they want to study the scriptures.
Consider: As you watch one way this can be done, consider what may work best for your students.
Practise by choosing a prophetic statement or a scripture passage you could use in class with your students. Write two or three questions you could ask in response to the statement or scripture you choose, that would help students establish their own purpose for daily study.
President M. Russell Ballard counseled, “Pray for divine guidance in your goal setting” (“Keeping Life's Demands in Balance,” Ensign, Apr. 1987). As students counsel with Heavenly Father in prayer about their scripture study goals, He can guide and prompt them through the Spirit. Teachers can encourage students to be prayerful by asking questions to help them consider ways to include Heavenly Father in their goal setting, invite them to act on those ways, and follow through with them soon after.
Consider: In the model below, what kind of question does the teacher ask and how effective is it?
Practise by constructing two questions you could ask students to motivate them to be more prayerful with their reading goals.
